fifth test, day four

0230: After McGrath got the final wicket, it seemed destined for Langer to get the winning runs. Hayden spoiled that by smacking the hapless Mahmood for six to tie the scores before getting the single required for victory. England were shambolic on what proved to be the final day of the 2006/7 Ashes series, and it seems hard to envisage the upcoming Commonwealth Bank one-day series being anymore competitive. Then it's the World Cup. England were notorious before this series for being very good at five-day cricket and terrible at one-day cricket, so it's a fun schedule they've got coming up. DT

0030: What a fitting end for an England side who ultimately didn't have the talent or more notably the fight to compete with an Australia side determined to right the wrongs of 16 months ago. They've done it in fine style, but England have many questions to answer about every aspect of this tour. Dave Tickner
