Ed Joyce was a late call-up to England's Ashes squad as a replacement for Marcus Trescothick.

Joyce, a dashing left-hander, has been prolific at county level for Middlesex since making his debut in 1999 and captained the team in 2004.

A first-class average in the high 40s is testament to his abilities, and he was tipped as a future England Test player before he had even qualified to play.

While his international experience with England is limited to just three ODIs and a Twenty20 outing cut short by an ankle injury just two overs into the match, Dublin-born Joyce has played 14 times for Ireland in the ICC Trophy, scoring 758 runs at an eye-catching average of 84.22.

Joyce completed his residency qualification in 2005, and fittingly made his debut for England in a one-day international against his former Ireland team-mates.

Joyce made just 10 on that occasion before suffering a nasty ankle injury against Sri Lanka in the Twenty20 international, but he now has the chance to showcase his undoubted ability on the highest stage and in the toughest possible conditions.
